FIRST OFF: THIS PLACE IS OVERPRICED!! Yes, even for collectable stuff. Don't believe me? Check Discogs - or any reasonable shop in Chicago. The upstairs shopkeep is an oppressive creep. He will treat you with suspicion and even scold you for moving stuff around to browse among the clutter, which there is a LOT of. There may be good records in there somewhere, but they're all buried under piles of BS you're not allowed to touch. GET REAL! I didn't dare take any photos, but you can read other people's reviews about their RIDICULOUS policy. Don't expect to find ANYTHING on their website in the actual store. That's all allegedly at an off-site warehouse. Maybe store your own (The Mixture) records there and stock things people ACTUALLY WANT TO LISTEN TO? Only shop here if you hate yourself.
Absurdly overpriced! Their budget bin is $10 per album and then nothing in the racks that is sleeved will be less than $10. And the budget bin isn’t something to write home about, it’s your average budget bin items. To give perspective they were asking $50+ for whipped cream and other delights, also $50 for some DOL reissue and then tapes the sleeves shut so you can only check the condition at checkout while the the owner watches
Most over priced record store ever. Used beat up records for $10, and common records for $25. Very rude worker, locks door and you have to knock to get in. You can't view the record in your own, you need to have them open it and view it from a distance. Go where you will be welcomed and not break the bank, but not here.
I went in looking for a collectible vinyl that had significant meaning to me. I found it and asked him what time the store closed because I had to go to the gym. When I returned, the copy I found was missing and replaced with a common digital press for the same price (much less valuable to Steve, but costs the same for me). I asked Steve about the retro copy and he redirected the question. I later looked on his website and it said that the version I found was still in stock. STAY AWAY. This guy is bad news. He will lie to inveigle you. He knows what he did. The sad part was, this was the second time I was willing to give the store a chance.
The owner has the entire store memorized and is very helpful. The store is very fun, mostly an extensive collection of classics and unique, rare albums but there are a few modern albums. Bought two albums for $30 each.
