Meh. Do I shop here because it’s local and convenient? Yes. Here’s why my lukewarm feelings. I’ve been here over 30 times in the last couple years. Not once has anyone smiled or said “welcome back” or anything pleasant whatsoever. Everyone working here seems annoyed. Generally speaking they are a bit overpriced from other shops or online prices for the equivalent LPs and condition. Albums are, many times, sealed in plastic and taped shut. I always ask at shops if I can open it myself to inspect the vinyl or if they would like to do it. That’s not a problem for me. What is a problem is this place requires assistance for many of the albums, and they seem annoyed that you’re asking to inspect the vinyl. Last, and not least in my book, is that they put pricing stickers on the vinyl label. Yes, it does peel off, however, it does leave blister marks or discoloration so if you’re a true collector, make sure you check how things look under the price label. I’ve never seen this done at any other shop, and I think it’s a poor practice in general.

I left with plenty of great records and CDs (some new, some used, but all very reasonably priced). They have an amazing selection, and I spent more time perusing than I initially thought I would. This place was well worth the drive from SGV.

I’ve shopped at CD Trader many times over the years, and it’s gotten to the point where I dread the experience. They’re my local record store, and I’ve found the occasional gem on the shelves, but more often than not it just isn’t worth it. Today was a perfect example. I went in specifically to buy replacement record jackets, something I’ve purchased there several times before. When I asked for them, the clerk looked at me like I had asked for something completely out of left field and said, “We don’t sell those.” When I told him I’d bought them there in the past, he replied, “Yeah, we don’t usually sell those.” This interaction pretty much sums up my experience here: inconsistent, dismissive, and needlessly discouraging. I want to like the store and have supported them over the years, but moments like this make it harder to justify coming back.

I always leave this place with such a quality haul. I have no idea how they manage to consistently bring in new stock of good stuff. are people really trading in that much? I've never come home to find a disc in poor condition either.
