I’ve been shopping for vinyl here for years. I’ve read the 1-star reviews here and don’t find them credible at all. The owner is a NYC transplant, and has a personality, sure. But if you come in and find you have issues with him, you should maybe start with who you see in the mirror. He has a million music industry stories, vast knowledge, especially about punk rock. 1-Star shoppers, maybe get over yourself or keep shopping for your vinyl at Urban Outfitters and Target. This place is a treasure.
Love this place so much. Over the past 5 years or so I’ve gotten into colllecting vinyl and this is by far my favorite place to shop. Actually it’s the only place I shop anymore. Mike is the coolest dude in the business and loves answering my dumb questions about artists. Usually his wife did their makeup or something! He’s always got insider scoop or a story. Mike never tries to upsell…actually he usually talks me down from buying more than 3 at a time. Play it loud baby!!
I'm shocked I haven't left a review yet. I've been coming to this store off and on for years. Mike and Pam are wonderful folk who just love creating a strong community around music. I remember the first time I walked in not know much about vinyl and Mike was able to come down to my level and teach me without making me feel silly or dumb. The sly wink after saying "Remember to play it loud" set that bond. Today I brought my kids in for the first time after we all started getting into family listening sessions. He gave my kids the exact same treatment. "Give me a list of artists and I'll make sure to have them next time". Nothing but warm proactive support. He's not trying to get a buck outta you, he's trying to build an experience. I love them both dearly. And I mean you too Pam!
Over the past month, I’ve gotten into vinyl collecting and already have over 60 records. Until today, I’d never had any issues with the four other local record stores I’ve visited. Last week, I spent over $500 at this particular store in one evening. When I finally sat down to listen to my purchases over the weekend, one record had serious quality issues—loud clicks on the bass and constant skipping. I’d been playing records perfectly fine the night before with friends, and other new albums like the first Beastie Boys record played without any problems right after. This one is so bad I can barely turn it up, and sometimes it won’t even play. My setup is solid: Fluance RT85, Marantz NR 1200, B&W 702’s, and a Klipsch sub. When I brought the record back to the store, instead of helping me, the owner interrogated me about my setup, how I play and store my records, and insisted “that’s just how the record is recorded.” He did everything except take responsibility and help a customer. It was a brand new record that came straight out of the shrink wrap—I’m not sure what the big deal was. I’ve been to four other local record stores and was never treated like this. You’d think I’d done something personal to offend him. My advice: avoid this store because they don’t stand behind what they sell. I’m stunned that I came home still holding a record I’d basically give away to anyone who wants it, since it’s useless to me. What’s especially disappointing is that before this interaction, this guy seemed like an absolute gem—great attitude, an old punk who loved the business. I thought I’d finally found my go-to spot where I’d become a regular. It’s really sad how that turned out.
Michael and his shop are exactly what I want and need from a vinyl shop… and he knows his shit at a level that few can compete with… not to mention a heart of gold… his love of music is a core part of him and his stories prove it. His shop became my happy place during Covid and though I don’t get in often enough, every time I visit I come away with more treasures to add to my collection and leave with my heart full. Thank you Michael for being you and for bringing something so special to SLC!!!
